Inspiring Metallic Paints

Metallic paints have come a long way in the last five years. Today's metallics are subtle and beautiful and are available in a wide range of colors. Most of them are water soluble acrylics, which makes them easy to use even if you aren't a trained decorative painter. Some of the manufacturers whose metallic paints are consumer friendly and easy to find include the Modern Masters Metallic Paint Collection, McCloskey's Metallic Glazes and Patina Finishes, Benjamin Moore's Studio Finishes collection, the Earth Elements Brilliant Metals line from Lowe's, as well as the metallic spray paints in the Design Master series available at craft stores.

Most metallic paints are sheer, making use of a base coat an essential part of the application process. You also should be aware that many metallics are prone to showing brush and roller marks, making their use in large areas more challenging without the use of spray equipment if your goal is a perfectly flawless metallic finish. As an alternative to spraying, Modern Masters sells a special roller for applying its metallic paints. Choose the surface where you'll apply a metallic paint with care because every hole, dent or other imperfection will show. Meticulous surface preparation is required if perfection is your goal, and because of the reflective quality of these paints it may not be possible to achieve, so take this into consideration when planning your project.

An ideal way to try metallic paints is on small decorative accents such as the inside of built-in shelving or on furniture or trim. Today's colors range from the expected shades of gold, silver, bronze and copper to reds, blues, greens and much more, and there are colors that will suit both the most modern décor and the most traditional. Also included in the metallic product lines are the pearlized paints which are equally beautiful, and which also come in many colors. Try one of these special paints when you're creating a striped effect on a wall with masking tape, or with large scale stencils, or to paint a powder room ceiling. You can also use metallic glazes over standard latex eggshell paint to very beautiful effect on walls. Do a sample board first to be sure you like the results. Another option is to refurbish furniture and tired or dated accessories with metallic paints in colors that suit your décor. They're also a great resource for seasonal decorating. Once you've seen the beautiful colors and had some experience with today's metallics you'll be inspired.
